Willamette Street Paving Project (Project completed)

Completed: Yes
Jurisdiction: City of Eugene Mode: Road
Description: A project to repair Willamette Street from 29th to 46th avenues is scheduled for the 2011 construction season. The project will connect the section of south Willamette Street (46th to 52nd avenues) repaved last year with the reconstructed intersection of 29th Avenue and Willamette Street, also done last year. More than 4 lane miles of deteriorated paving in this section of Willamette Street will be fixed through a combination of reconstruction and resurfacing work. Sustainable practices include the use of warm-mix asphalt and in-place road recycling techniques. Onstreet bike lanes will be added from just south of 29th Avenue to 32nd Avenue for southbound cyclists and from Donald Street to 29th Alley for northbound cyclists. The project also includes repairs to the underground stormwater and wastewater systems, replacement of sidewalk access ramps and traffic signal improvements at Crest Drive, Donald Street and 32nd Avenue.
Timeline: Summer 2011 - Fall 2011
Traffic Impacts: The work will cause significant traffic disruptions. One lane on Willamette Street will remain open for southbound traffic, which may be subject to occasional delays. There will be detours for northbound traffic. Access to homes and businesses will be provided at all times. In the first phase of construction (Willamette Street from 29th Avenue to Crest Drive), northbound traffic will be detoured on 33rd Avenue to Hilyard Street (see map to right). In the later phases of construction (Willamette Street from Crest Drive to 46th Avenue) Willamette will be closed to northbound traffic between Crest Drive and 46th Avenue, and all traffic will be detoured onto 46th Avenue to Donald. Drivers heading north from streets on the west side of Willamette between Crest Drive and 39th Avenue should take Willamette south to 40th Avenue and then to Donald Street.
Work Schedule:
  • Early July – Excavate the existing concrete surface on Willamette from 29th to Crest Drive and rebuild the street using warm-mix asphalt. One lane open for southbound traffic; northbound traffic detoured at 33rd to Hilyard.
  • Mid-July – Reconstruct Willamette Street from Crest Drive to 40th Avenue using in-place recycling.  Northbound Willamette closed from at 46th Avenue (use Donald Street as a detour
  • Mid-August – Repave Willamette Street from 40th to 46th avenues with warm mix asphalt. Northbound Willamette closed from 46th to Donald.
  • Early September – Top lift paving, final lane striping and signal work. All work scheduled to be completed by September 23, 2011.

The primary source of funding for the $1.5 million project is the 2008 voter-approved bond measure to fix streets. Working together to keep you moving
